Art Auction to Support Land Alliance
Special to the Post | 7/23/10
Back to the News Summaries
Join the Southwest Land Alliance tonight Friday, July 23 from 6pm-9pm for an evening of art at the Wild Spirit Gallery  including a Silent Auction to benefit SLA.

This is also a chance to peruse the gallery’s offerings while enjoying complimentary appetizers, beer and wine, and live entertainment.

The Auction features work from some of our most talented local and regional artists, many of whom have graciously set reserve prices that are well below the normal retail value of their works.

Following are several of the pieces that will be available:

‘Dorothy’s Nightmare’ by Pierre Mion, Watercolor

Pierre Mion is well known (being nationally and internationally recognized) as an illustrator and as a fine artist. The demanding discipline necessary to the illustrator is evident in his paintings, many of which reflect his love of nature. His subjects include western landscapes, farm scenes, old buildings and houses, street scenes, water and sea shore scenes, people, portraits and animals. His media are oil, acrylic, gouache, watercolor, pastel and pencil.

Opening bid $800 (Gallery price $2,300)

‘Contemplation’ by Susan Martin Serra of Belvedere Art Tile, Low-fired earthenware, formed and hand finished. Maiolica glazed and hand painted with mineral pigments.

Susan, owner/artist of Belvedere Art Tile, lives in Chromo, CO.  Her artwork primarily derives from the drama and beauty of the San Juan Mountains surrounding her home and studio. The processes involved in creating her pieces -- drawing and sketching, preparing the raw clay, relief carving, the painting of images, and finally the firing of the work... is a challenging, yet wonderful journey.
Opening bid $250 (Gallery price $350)

‘Wetherill’s Mesa’ by Stuart Jones of Sen Oj Studio, Oil on Board, Natural Wood

When Stuart came to Colorado from Indiana at the age of thirteen, he was awed by the openness and freedom of the West. His goal is to capture the unique and vivid colors of the turbulent skies, the majestic feeling of the mountains, the delicacy of the environment, the wildlife, and the folklore of the American Indian.
To do so, he exaggerates the color and the shadows to get visual texture. The idea is to take any subject and make it "jump."
Opening bid $1,300  (Gallery price $2,600)

More auction items can be viewed at the SLA website.  All purchases go to support local artists as well as SLA’s ongoing land protection efforts. Through conservation and stewardship, SLA helps local people preserve the beautiful private lands that define and sustain our community.

We hope that you will help us make this year’s auction the most enjoyable and successful yet! The gallery is located at 480 San Juan Drive, Pagosa Springs. There will be a $5.00 entrance fee at the door.
